Mac 10.5 screen Sharing over internet

I got a task 2 days back that I have to share a Mac 10.5 computer from one location to my office and I am a dumb for Mac things till this time. I decided to look for the same over internet and I got a solution too but before that I tried to get the Mac machine on vpn so I could make that Mac Machine a part of my vpn network but I was not able to get the success. So I decided to go to other option that was sharing screen over internet.

For doing this you need to do the following steps.

1) Go to system preferences of Mac and click on sharing
2) In Internet and Network tab click on sharing
3) Here you will get lot of option choose screen sharing and than click on computer settings.
4) You can decide to secure it by you own password. This screen sharing will be done by vnc server.
5) Now you are done with one part of it and you can access your computer locally with tightvnc viewer that you can download from www.tightvnc.com
6) If you want to access this computer from outside world that is real internet network than you have to do few more steps for the same. You have to forward 2 ports on your modem/router.
7) Open your router and in port forwarding section add 2 lines for forwarding to port 5900 and port 3283 on your Mac Machine IP.

I apologies that I am not able to give you a detailed information about port forwarding but that is dependent on your modem/router that is different for ever router. If you find a problem in your router you can search on the Google with this string and you will get a answer there “router name port forwarding” . Please remove the quotes and router name is a variable that will get replaced by your router or modem name and number.

If you are still having problem please come back to me drop me a mail or comment I will get back to you with a solution.

You can use this port forwarding for accessing any of the computers for vnc server.

hi, thank you... the 3283 port forwarding did the trick for me. Now i have 2 followups:

1- it doesn't seem to work with a machine that is connected directly to the cable modem, without a router; message is "incorrect login"

2- behind the router, I need to configure a second computer, which, in vine server you simply set it up to work on port 5901. How do you set up Screen Sharing?

thank you
alex

P.S. in case somebody wonders... the advantage of using Screen Sharing over Vine server is the ability to see dual monitor systems

Hi alex,

First I apologize for late reply,

Without router it wont work.

Behind the router keep the destination port what is needed for your vine server and it will do the task as router will only forward the ports nothing else.

Thanks
AP
