Port Restricted for security reason Firefox

Today someone in my office came to me and said that she is getting an error that port restricted for security reason in her Firefox browser for some local host server. She said she already tried everything in its solution but I knew she didn’t.

I went to about:config or Firefox and tried to search something related to this but got nothing then I opened Google and first 2-3 result my problem got resolved. Here is complete solution for this problem in steps.

1) Open your Firefox browser, in url box type about:config and press enter.
2) In next screen you will get a warning message click on “I will be careful, I promise!” button.
3) In next screen search for “network.security.ports.banned.override”.
4) If this string is not there write click anywhere in the firefox text window and click on new and then select string.
4) You will get a box says “ Enter the preference name” in its text box give the name “network.security.ports.banned.override” and press ok.
5) In next screen you have to give the string value. This string value is port number of your port.
6) If you want to allow all port then please give 0-65535. It will allow all the port. If you want to give some specific port then you can give those specific port using comma separated value example 101, 102, 103 etc.
7) Once it’s done you are ready to visit your url and this time you will be able to access the url without any problem.

Few days back someone in my officie said to me that they need the IE 6 back in there computer so I should install the IE 6 in their XP computer. I said to them just uninstall IE 7 from your computer and IE 6 will come automatically in windows XP machine. The other person said to me he already tried that but there is no remove button in IE7 in add remove windows program.

It was a new thing for me as I have not seen this issue earlier, so I went to his seat and saw the computer but found nothing unusual in computer. After few second I realized that all the uninstall of IE 7 that I did was before XP SP3 so I checked if SP 3 was installed on the computer and yes XP SP3 was installed.

Ok so now I just removed the XP SP3 and then I restarted the machine than removed IE 7 and this time I was able to remove it.

For removing XP SP3 you just need to go to your add remove program and remove the XP SP3.

Keep remember this will take hell lot of time to remove XP SP3 from computer so I would recommend you to do it in night and leave your computer on so it would not affect your working hour.

One more thing I must recommend to you that do a backup of the entire important file and do create a system restore point before uninstalling SP3. Backup and system restore point creation is not necessary but a good practice to do before any risky task.

Its very hyped in market that Google released its browser named as Chrome and there are lot of specialities about the same so I am not going to talk about its specialiteis and other features.

When I tried to download the google crhome browser I found its giving only a file of 500KB aproximatly but the actull download size of its installation file is 7.35MB. Google is not providing the direct download link but I managed to get its offline installation file from the temp downloaded folder of google chrome installation.

I downloaded it from its 500KB file and then copie the full sized download file in my computer from temp location to share the same with all the people in my office.

Take full backup of Firefox

Day Before yesterday I got a mail from one of my blog visitor that he had to take a complete backup of his machine before formatting it including all the setting of Firefox. He said he do not want to give a complete day to restore his Firefox setting after formatting the machine so if I can do any help for him that would solve his purpose. I understand this because I felt the same pain in my eyes when I reformatted my machine long back and lost with Firefox. Lot of extension saved forms, saved password and many more things. That time it took me 2 days to restore my Firefox to its original state so I decided to goggle once before formatting my computer again.

After goggling I found I did not tried earlier so I had no answer but this time I searched for this and I got lot of answers for my this question but I like MozBackup. At present many different tool are there but I recommend only 2 ways.

1. Manual Backup (best method)

2) MozBackup

Manual Backup is as simple as you take other backup and copy paste the profile

MozBackup is a wizard tool so, very simple in its own way.

Ok Let’s talk about manual Backup First

Its backup and restoration is simple copy and paste major problem is to get the actual folder.

In windows XP and 2003 machine path is

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

For windows Vista path is

C:\users\\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles

Now what you need to do is just copy this profile folder as backup.

For restoring Firefox copy all the files and folder of this backed up profile folder in your new installed Firefox profile at same place.

About MozBackup

It’s simple you download it and use it. You can download it from here I would recommend you to download zip file. After downloading unzip it and run the MozBackup.exe from extracted folder. It will open a wizard click on next and you will get bellow screen

Select the Mozilla Firefox and click on next if you are running

Firefox it will ask you to close the Firefox so close the Firefox and click on next. On next screen it will show you all the available profiles of Firefox select desired profile (if you do not have more than one profile it will just show the default profile) and click on next. By default it will save the backup file in my document folder you can change the location with your wish.

For restoration simply run the same wizard again and this time

choose restore option instead of backup.

Things to remember

1. Its ok you took backup of these files but its always a good idea to take backup of bookmark separately.

2. If you are not able to view the application data folder than please select the show hidden folder option from your windows explorer ->tools->folder option->view->hidden files and folders.

You can view any image in the full screen mode while you are scrolling by just double click another double click will take you back to wall. I had doubt about its bandwidth consumption if it will take more bandwidth than my normal usage and they replied like this

1. We did not want to define a minimum bandwidth because we think our software should work on all computers, but, ideally, the faster the better.

2. The amount of bandwidth consumed depends on the content you are viewing, we are just presenting it.

That means if you are going full screen it will not give you thumbnail image it will get a full screen image from original source. The good thing in this full screen image is that if you want to download this just go to Firefox by switch button right bottom corner and it will open the image you can switch back to piclens view with similar ease. Other than this one better feature is if you have 400*300 or any small size image than also it will stretch the image to full screen and most of the time full screen stretched image is not scattered.

Day before yesterday one of my office mate asked me how he could take backup of his Firefox and Internet Explorer bookmarks, After that I realised its not a very well known way to take backup even its very simple so I decide to make this post for Firefox and I explorer bookmark Backup.

For bookmark backup we have two way to take backup

1) Offline Backup (take all backup in your backup as you do other backup)

2) Online Backup (upload bookmarks on some bookmark site)

I personally recommend both the method because one is simple and easy and other one is simple easy plus accessible from any part of the world. Very useful when you do not have access of your computer, and you need your bookmarks to do some task urgently.

Offline Backup :->

Internet Explorer:->

Backup

* From the File menu, select Import and Export.

* Click next and select Export Favourites.

* Save this file to your computer as bookmarkbackup.html.

This will be an HTML File now if you have to take restore your bookmark in some other computer just import this file in Internet explorer instead of export.

Restore

* From the File menu, select Import and Export.

* Click next and select Import Favourites.

* Browse to your bookmarkbackup.html file and next. Its done.

For Firefox

Backup

* From the bookmark menu, select organize bookmark or press ctrl+shift+B.

* you will get Library window here click on import and backup and select exporthtml.

* Save this html file and it’s done.

Restore bookmark in Firefox.

* From the bookmark menu, select organize bookmark or press ctrl+shift+B.

* You will get Library window here click on import and backup and select Import html.

* It’s done.

Online backup :->

For online backup you need to decide an online bookmark provider I recommend yahoo bookmarks.

1) Go to http://bookmarks.yahoo.com/ login here with your account.

2) Click on tools (top corner).

3) Click in Import bookmark

4) Select bookmark file click on browse and give the html file path that you backed up.

5) Click on import button.

Once this import is done you are done with your backup. You can see these bookmarks anywhere in the world.

For restore this bookmark

Yahoo bookmark ->tools->export bookmarks->bookmark type and click on export.

For restoring in browser choose restore bookmark

As per my promise to give shortcut tips for Firefox in my previous post I am here with a list of shortcut keys and few useful tips that can enhance your Firefox experience.

As always I use these shortcuts to just save the time as gamers save the time to win the game with cheats. Here it’s not like cheat but it’s just a way to save the time. After these shortcuts your life would be very simple but I am not claming at all that these shortcuts will replace your mouse for browsing but I can assure you for this that these shortcuts will give you a different browsing experience that you have never before and your mouse use will reduce by 50 percent.

Firefox is itself a very big tool in itself so I am dividing it in few separate parts.

For starting firefox user windows+r then typefirefox and press enter. Firefox will get open.

Toolbar Navigation

Alt+D or Ctrl+L = select the address bar type and go
Ctrl+K = select search bar in Firefox just type and search
Backspace or Alt+ left arrow = Back
Shift+Backspace or Alt+ Right arrow = Forward
Ctrl+up or down arrow = Change search engine ( this option would work after highlighting search engine option so before changing search engine please press Ctrl+k).
Up and down reflect next and previous.
Alt+Enter = open search in new tab.

I am too lazy to type full url like www.xyz.com so I just type xyz and I press ctrl+enter it takes me to www.xyz.com, we can use the same for .net and org domain also.

Book Mark
Ctrl+D = book mark current tab page.
Ctrl+shift+D= bookmark all open tab.
Ctrl+shift+B= Organize bookmark It will open a new window to organize the bookmark tabs.
Ctrl+B = Show the bookmark search side bar.
Alt+B= Show the bookmark in menu.

Tabs
Ctrl+T = Open a new tab.
Ctrl+w = Close the front tab
Ctrl+f4 =Close the front tab.
Ctrl+shift+t= Undo last close tab (very useful if you closed a tab by mistake)
Ctrl+tab= Switch to next tab.
Ctrl+ (1-9) = Select tab from one to nine.
Ctrl+u = open source of the tab.

Find
Ctrl+F= find the word in page.
(Alt+N=Move to next match
Alt+P=Prvious Match
Alt+A=Highlight All Match) these three option work after Ctrl+F.
/ = find the link in the page and at hit of enter it will open up in new tab or same tab. If it’s not opening in new tab and you want to open it in new tab use
Ctrl+Enter to open link in new tab.
‘ = find the link.


Few shortcut those cant be in any category
Ctrl+j=show downloads bar
Ctrl+shift+del=clear private data
F11 =view in full screen mode
Esc=stop loading page
